Waffeln backen
European Day of Languages 2023
Davorka Nekić / datum: 29. 9. 2023. 18:50

Since September 26th is traditionally celebrated as the European Day of Languages, the students of Elementary school Nikola Tesla from Moravice dedicated a whole week in which they learnt a lot of new things, repeated what they already knew, and also had a great time. Our youngest, first, and second graders made paper dolls in folk costumes from European countries and, in addition to the appearance of traditional costumes, learnt the names of these countries and traditional dishes. Third and fourth graders became world travelers and created their own passports in which they entered the countries they wanted to visit – they found out what the flags looked like and some interesting things related to the selected countries. The fifth graders played a guessing game Where's Wally? in which, based on the flag and some sights, they had to tell which country it was, while the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students tried their hand at the pub quiz for the first time and achieved enviable results.

As Edward De Waal said, With languages, you are at home anywhere.

Project: My colourful school stuff
Davorka Nekić / datum: 26. 9. 2023. 20:07

The third graders have completed their first project this school year.   They revised the school supplies and then visually displayed the selected supplies they presented using structures This is and It is. Each item was described in colour.  There were many colourful bags, pencil cases, pencils, rubbers, sharpeners...

Pupils enriched the existing vocabulary, honed their presentation skills, and practiced proper pronunciation. And all this in a fun and engaging way!

Collection of chinquins 'O, moj Senju grade'
Davorka Nekić / datum: 20. 6. 2023. 19:34

It is no secret that the students of the Nikola Tesla Branch School from Moravice love projects, and they gladly participate in them. They're also not afraid to try something new. So this time, it was the chinquins turn.

A chinquin is a poem of only five verses, of which the first verse consists of one noun, the second one of two adjectives, the third one of three verbs or verbal nouns, the fourth one is a sentence of four words, while the fifth verse is also a noun closely related to the one from the first verse.

Thus, our students became true poets and tried writing chinquins after they visited the town of Senj, which was both an inspiration raid for their works.

Namely, on June 2, the students visited this Uskok City and got acquainted with its rich history and culture. From this, a cross-curricular project of English, Croatian language, and Serbian language and culture spawned.

Students were supposed to write chinquins on one of the offered topics: Bora, Uskoks, Senj, Poets, and Nehaj. The written chinquins were then translated into English. But it didn't end there! They wrote them in Glagolitic script and then in Cyrillic.  Not only did they use three languages, but also two scripts. The beauty is in the diversity, isn't it?

They signed their chinquins with codes, and the expert group consisting of  Mirjana Krivokuća-Rožić, a Croatian language teacher, and Valentina Vukadinović, a teacher of the Serbian language and culture, had the difficult task of choosing the three most successful works among 26.

While the members of the expert group decided on this, under the guidance of Davorka Nekić, an English language teacher, a  collection of student works was created - a chinquins called "O, moj Senju grade", which, along with chinquins in Croatian and English, is adorned with original photographs and the authorial artwork of Petra Rebić, a 7th-grade student.

On June 20th, the collection of chinquins was officially presented. Certificates were presented to all participants of the poetry competition, and those for the first 3 places won commemorative "Senj" awards.

The most successful chinquins wrote:

  1. Sara Karabatković: Fortress
  2. Karlo Labazan: Fortress
  3. Ozren Jakšić: Bora

We congratulate all our students on participating in the competition and the effort they invested in creating their poetic works, without which the collection "O, moj Senju grade" would not exist.

Be the change you want to see in the world!  (M. Gandhi)

Collection 'O, moj Senju grade' is in the attachment.

Field trip: Red-haired Zora
Davorka Nekić / datum: 2. 6. 2023. 23:27

On Friday, June 2nd, students of the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades of elementary school Nikola Tesla from Moravice, accompanied by teachers Mirjana Krivokuća-Rožić, Valentina Vukadinović, and Davorka Nekić, visited the town of Senj as part of the planned field trip Red-haired Zora. During the town tour, they saw the remains of the city walls, which are older than those in Dubrovnik, Zadar, Šibenik, and Korčula, as well as the Šabac Tower, which is part of these walls. Following the QR codes and accompanying the plot of the novel Red-haired Zora and Her Gang by the German writer Kurt Held, they visited the squares of Senj: The Dvorac Square, the Mirko Ožegović Square, and the Cilnica Square, saw the Great Gate where the Josephine Road ends, learned about clergyman Blaž Baromić, the Senj Glagolitic printing house, and the Senj Table, saw the Ježić and Vukasović palaces and the historically significant house of the jeweler Živković with an ornamented shell,  the birth houses of prominent Croatian writers S. S. Kranjčević and Vjenceslav Novak, visited the Park of Poets, walked through Nehaj and with expert guidance visited the Nehaj Tower and learned all about its history and the widely known Uskoks and the Senj bora.

The Senj Tourist Board gave the students brochures Town of Red-haired Zora and Senj4Kids, which made the sightseeing more interesting and will benefit the students and their teachers in further classes.

A school trip to the Plitvice Lakes

On 7 October we visited one of Crotian national parks which is also the oldest one. We had a lot of fun on the way there...as well as on the way home...At first the weather was cloudy but it wasn't raining. However, our luck didn't last...During the second half of our sightseeing the rain started...and we hurried to the bus...Some of us got wet more than others.

Despite the weather we had the best time ever!

P.S. It was also our teacher's birthday and our present to her was a folk song wishing her to live until she's 105 and then all over again!laugh
