The Week of Australia 2015

The Week of Australia

23rd November 2015  - 27th November 2015

On Monday, November 23rd two 6th class pupils, Valentina Alinčić and Roberta Vučinić opened the Week of Australia in both English and Croatian language. Why in both languages? Because the pupils from the lower classes don't understand that much of English. As well as some teachers. So they did the opening speech bilingually and everyone could understand everything.

With the last words of the opening speech the national anthem Advance Australia Fair started.

The guided tour was led by a 6th class pupil Vanja Vučinić dresses like Felix the Cat, a famous Australian cartoon character.

Not to get lost on the way...they just needed to follow Taz, the most famous animated Tasmanian devil.

At the school entrance there was a desk decorated with the Welcome sign and Patrick White's picture next to it. There was also a golden wattle bouquet since this flower is the official flower of Australia as well as a kangaroo as the official animal of the country.

The next in line to represent the beautiful Australia was a little kangaroo who greeted the visitor in a typically Australian way with G'day, mate!

At the very beginning of the tour she took them on a journey through geography of Australia and they got to know how many regions make Australia and which are their capitals. They found out that even though two largest citiest are Sydney and Melbourne, none of those is the capital. The capital is Canberra which is considered to be the bush capital. They also found out that Australia is the 6th largest country in the world but besides being the country, it's also an island and a continent. It is referred to as the country „Down Under“ since it's on the south hemisphere.

Regarding the history of Australia they found out about the Aborigines as the native people of Australia. They saw an original boomerang and learnt that it was used for hunting and that there are boomerangs of different sizes and shapes. They also heard of an Aboriginal instrument new to them – the didgeridoo and remembered it from some TV commercials. What impressed them the most was the fact that the Aborigines are the oldest living population on the planet.

They learnt something about the Australian governement and how it functions – who makes the laws, who enforces them and what is the highest court in the country. They found out that it's a republic monarchy with its government whose head is the Prime Minister as well as that it has got the Queen. The newly elected Prime Minister is Malcolm Turnbull while the Queen is actually Queen Elizabeth II which was interesting for them to hear. But then they remembered the colonisation and they understood why the Queen of England is also the Queen of Australia.

There was also a poster containing all 28 Prime Ministers of Australia. The current PM is the 29th one. They could see which political party they belonged to as well as the list of the political parties in Australia.

There was a poster about the top 5 Australian universities including the University of Sydney, the University of Queensland, the University of Melbourne, Monash University and the Australian National University. They learnt that each of those universities has got its own coat of arms and motto.

They leant about many Australian landmarks such as Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne, Adelaide Gaol, the Wheel of Brisbane, the National War Memorial, the Old Mill in Perth, Port Arthur in Tasmania, the State Library in Queensland, Uluru, Kangaroo Island and some more. There are usually two Australian landmarks that they encounter – Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. So this was a great opportunity for them to see many more landmarks.

The latter two were also presented by the paper models.

They got to know something more on the Australian wild life and animals such as a kookaburra, a large flying fox, a kangaroo, a wombat, a quoll, a Tasmanian tiger, a Tasmanian devil, an emu, a platypus, a koala, a black red-belly snake, a dingo, an echidna, and many more.

They enjoyed learning about the film industry and TV shows including names such as Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Chris Hemsworth as well as TV shows like Neighbours, Mother and Son and Dame Edna Everage.

Music introduced them to some of the greatest Australian artists such the Bee Gees, AC DC, Savage Garden, Olivia Newton-John and „the pocket Venus“, Kylie Minogue.

Literature was represented by three great writers – Patrick White, Ethel Turner and „Banjo“ Paterson.

The last poster in line was the red one as is the colour of poppies because the battle fields of Normandy were covered with poppies when the Australian soldiers lost their lives in the First World War. They heard of two tunes – The Rouse and The Last Post as well as that the instrument playing them is the trumpet. Poppies became the emblem of the Remembrance Day celebrated on November 11th.

Since we all love to eat, we had to mention some traditional dishes such as Pavlova, a cake made to honour a Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova, then the Australian traditional bread called damper and finally the Anzac biscuits.

Pupils had a chance to read an Aboriginal legend called The Creation of Life thanks to which they found out about the „Dreamtime“.

During each break there was a pupil in charge for playing  a CD with the Australian music. The list included Bee Gees, AC DC, Savage Garden, Olivia Newton - John and Kylie Minogue.

The 6th class pupils had a film workshop Ned Kelly thanks to which they found out about one of the most famous Australian bushrangers. They also made a Powerpoint presentation on him presented by Roberta Vučinić as well as on Ben Hall, a gentleman bushranger presented by Roberta's twin sister Vanja or simply Felix the Cat.

Doris Klaić from the 1st class and her brother Sanjin from the 4th class presented an Aboriginal story for children titled How the Birds Got their Colour. Sanjin was reading the story while Doris was presenting her drawings that follow the story.

Michael Mlađenović, Zoran Mamula and Igor Polovina from the 8th class gave a detailed presentation on Aboriginal Australians as well.

Mirjam Golik and Roberta Vučinić from the 6th class said something about the Aboriginal art for children.

Vanja Vučinić from the 6th class introduced the Australian flora and fauna to the visitors after which 10 more pupils (Zoran Mamula, Ivan Dokmanović, Ema Lešnjaković, David Ćelam, Valentina Alinčić, Mirjam Golik, Luka Majetić, Ema Konjević, Teodor Ninković and Sretan Vučinić) told the visitors a sentence or two about the endemic animals that live in Australia. They even had the stuffed animals.

We also had a very important visit from the representatives of the Australian Embassy. Mrs Dijana Padežanin was one of them. She's the one with whom made all the arrangement regarding Australian Education Kit which we recommend to everyone. It's a great teaching reasourse.

The other guest from the Embassy came from Canberra and his name is Mr Andrea Carlo Biggi. He's the Policy Officer for the Southern Europe Section at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade within the Australian Government. He went on the tour through Australia guided by our own Felix after which he watched the presentations made by pupils from the 5th to the 8th class. He was so impressed that he even participated in presenting of the stuffed animals. He told pupils stories about kangaroos that live close to his house as well as a kookaburra who was so cocky that it even stole his steak and large flying foxes that can be seen in Canberra.

Pupils were given little koalas and kangaroos to remember the Australian Embassy's visit by and Vanja gave Mr Biggi a painting of Moravice landscape painted by our History and Geography teacher, Mr Novica Vučinić.

Vanja  also did an interview with Mr Biggi in front of all the pupils from the  upper classes.

The school received a certificate from the Embassy for promoting Australia and the Australian culture.

After the „serious part“ there was a little reception and it was very Australian, but the best thing was the cake.

We would also like to thank the Embassy of Australia for supporting us every step of the way.

Special thank you goes to Policy Officer for Southern European Section at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Andrea Carlo Biggi from Canberra who came to our little school and brought a little bit of Australia with him.

And one more thank you goes to Mrs Dijana Padežanin from the Embassy who was very helpful and supportive every step of the way.

You have...

...a beautiful homeland  everyone should visit

...a variety of the Aboriginal languages you should try to preserve

...the education system you should be proud of

...the writers everyone should read

...and much, much more.

A school trip to the Plitvice Lakes

On 7 October we visited one of Crotian national parks which is also the oldest one. We had a lot of fun on the way there...as well as on the way home...At first the weather was cloudy but it wasn't raining. However, our luck didn't last...During the second half of our sightseeing the rain started...and we hurried to the bus...Some of us got wet more than others.

Despite the weather we had the best time ever!

P.S. It was also our teacher's birthday and our present to her was a folk song wishing her to live until she's 105 and then all over again!laugh
